FAQ: Mail Ballots in Nevada

October 9, 2026

Updated for the 2026 General Election, this frequently asked questions (FAQ) explainer provides a voter-focused overview of Nevada’s mail ballot procedures, detailing how mail ballots are distributed, completed, returned, verified, processed, and counted.

Since 2021, Nevada has provided a mail ballot to every active registered voter unless the voter opts out. Voters may return their completed ballot by mail or an authorized ballot drop box, or they may vote in person during early voting or on Election Day. This FAQ sets forth important deadlines and identification requirements, options for returning a ballot, signature verification and “curing” procedures, and how voters can track the status of their mail ballot. It describes how local election officials process and count mail ballots, including the use of Nevada’s Voter Registration Election Management Solution (VREMS), Poll Pads, and ballot-processing technology. Finally, the FAQ outlines safeguards required under Nevada law, including bipartisan election boards, chain-of-custody procedures, equipment testing, signature-verification audits, and secure networks.

This elections FAQ is part of a series originally produced by the Guinn Center in the fall of 2024 and updated for the current 2026 election cycle. The 2024 briefs were funded, in part, by the Democracy Defense Project.
